Iridescent, Structural Color

The Morpho butterfly exhibits iridescent, angle-independent structural color. The nano-structural surface of the butterfly's wings causes light to absorb, reflect, and refract to display the evident blue color.

Redesigned Surface Structure

Using SOLIDWORKS software, the structural surface of the Morpho butterfly wing was redesigned to mimic the structural color. (a) Front view of the patterned pillar structures. (b) Isometric view of a single scale structure on the wing of the Morpho butterfly. (c) Pillar structure evident on the wing of the Morpho butterfly.

Light Tools Simulation of Bio-Inspired Structure

LightTools simulation software by Synopsys was used to simulate structural color on the model (pink) of the single scale surface structure of a Morpho butterfly. The simulation was run to assess the structural color and reflective properties of the model. A full-spectrum of visible light was emitted from the receiver and the results were captured in the source.
